Warren’s Blog – Going Grey
Hi
Going grey is a problem for all of us eventually; most of us at some point will begin to go grey. Read on and hopefully I’ll answer a few questions, settle a few worries or just confirm what you already know!
I recently did an interview for BBC Radio London on the Vanessa Feltz show about men going grey and whilst preparing it got me thinking, so here I am sharing with you all I know and my opinion on it, because you know what? It’s not all that bad!
So firstly, GREYING IS NATURAL
Caucasian people on average begin turning grey at 34.
Asians and African people on average begin turning grey at 47.
It has nothing to do with your life expectancy so don’t despair. *Sigh of relief!*
Why do we go grey?
Pigment in the hair shaft comes from special cells at the root of the hair called ‘melanocytes’, which are genetically programmed to make a certain amount of pigment at specific stages. Obviously at some point in the dreaded ageing process these cells make less and less pigment until they stop altogether. It doesn’t matter how old you are, the principal reason for going grey is genetics and completely individual.
Also
There are additional causes for grey hair too: excessive stress being the main one.
Constant tension, smoking and certain medical conditions such as Thyroid Disorder, Vitiligo, Chronic Vitamin B deficiency and Anoemia can also cause you to go grey..
Should I colour?
Initially I would have no problem in suggesting colouring to cover the greys but remember you have to keep on top of it as GREY HAIRS ARE THICKER AND USUALLY GROW FASTER THAN NORMAL HAIR and seeing grey re-growth is not good! Get it done professionally in the salon. Trained colour technicians are better than what you get from a packet.
Richard Gere: Embraced going grey but maintains his handsome look by being cleanly shaven, tanning etc
George Clooney: Some would say he’s more attractive now grey, his career certainly took off when he was grey!
George Lamb: George is a young cool guy who’s career is only going one way and he is seriously embracing going grey so have no fear you younger guys.
Grooming Tips
Self grooming is key to making Grey hair look fresh and modern and it’s not just hair you need to pay attention too.
- Get regular haircuts into a cropped tailored shape; avoid ‘crazy’ hairstyles and anything too long and scruffy.
- Grow sideboards to where the ear lobe begins and keep them trimmed.
- Products: on whiter hair, Nicky Clarke Close Up And Perfect Creme De Luxe will give great gloss.
- Be clean shaven, avoid any scruffiness.
- Eyebrows, nose hair, ear hair…..keep on top of.
- Use a tinted moisturiser so you’re more tanned, this can make you look healthier.
- If you wear glasses, opt for contact lenses. Glasses can sometimes be ageing.
My opinion is embrace going grey, as long as you take care of your appearance and keep yourself well groomed and manicured there is no way greying should be a problem. Be careful with colouring. Remember, once you start covering you have to continue to cover the greys which can be costly and time consuming.
