Top 5 Do’s and Don’ts for Big Occasion Hair
Top 5 Do’s:
Pre Planning - Plan you’re Hairstyle will work with you. What i mean is, if for instnace you’re wearing your hair up and exposing your ears, check you actually do like your ears being open. So grip your hair up and look in the mirror for things you do and dont like about yourself. The elements of yourself you like, work with and accentuate, if parts of you dont like then cover. Hair is so versatile, a tendril here or there can soften a look.
Dress – Tailor your hair to complement your outfit. Hair is an accessory, a very powerful one but it should never be overbearing and dominate…unless that is the look you’re trying to achieve.
If you have detailing around the neck, be it a high collar or jewells then put the hair up, if it has a low cut backline, pull the back down and maybe grip the top up. Work with the outfit so you have a complete look and not a ‘unstructured busy’ one
Change – Do something different. This is your chance to shine, why not aim to steal the show and be the talk of the event/occasion. I’ve done so many of these awards, premieres and quite often the brief is to make a certain statement to capture a certain audience. Trust me it’s no coincidence that celebrities go for a re style and unveil at there new premiere or they need to get into the press, change is good, change makes people talk. I admire women that come out of there comfort zone, there is an air of confidence but also vulnerability in a woman trying something different that makes a woman sexy
Product - It’s so important you can create a great base to work with. By this i mean build guts into the hair, the hair needs lots of love to do things it usually shouldnt and more importantly to last. Any good updo will require lots of prep. Nicky always says to me Style without substance is not worth anything, and he’s totally correct. Nicky Clarke Hairaising spray is my product of choice for creating long lasting volume in hair, i use it at all my shows and shoots, i genuinely couldnt be without it.
Research – Do your research, look at what has recently been seen on the runway. Who has wore what at the Oscars, Bafta’s, Cannes, Grammy’s etc. Look at the hair but also the clothes, why that style has been used and put together with that outfit. Pay attention to face shape, what is your face shape…try and match to a celebrity. Broaden your mind with ideas and knowledge and that way your in control and will be more confident.
Top 5 Dont’s:
Confidence - Don’t pull out at the last minute and go for something safe, all your planning has been wasted.
Time - Don’t have colour the day before, tints can sometimes mark the scalp and are difficult to get off the hairline.
Praise - Don’t base whether your new look was a success if you havent received lots of positive comments, usually that is a sign in itself. People can get jealous!
Over backcomb – I always see it, woman want to go big so they backcomb the life out of their hair for volume. Use Heated rollers or velcro rollers for volume, you get movement on the ends and it gives the look as a whole more quality. You can tease the roots gently by pushing the hair at the roots back on itself, do this a couple of times
Forget your Back up – In your bag there is enough space for a few grips, pins and a comb. You never know what can happen. Would be horrendous to get caught short, if you can also take out a small hairspray or dry shampoo to replenish the look and give some hold.
