Black Hair Magazine: Question time with Dan Thomas

Style Designer Dan Thomas explains how to create perfect curls and waves with your hair without using too many hot tools that can cause damage.

Q: No matter how much heat protectant I use on my relaxed hair it just doesn’t react well to heat – have you got any advice on creating curls or waves without using too many hot tools?

  • Start by roughly drying with some Nicky Clarke Argan oil on the hair. This will make the hair supple which makes the hair easier to work with and will give it a glossy finish
  • Take inch square sections starting off at the parting and spritz over with Nicky Clarke Hair Raising
  • Wrap these sections of hair around your finger (for a tighter curl, twist the section first then wrap it around your finger) and clip in place with a sectioning clip
  • Lightly spray over with Nicky Clarke Hold and Shine Ultimate Hairspray
  • Using a diffusor attachment with your hairdryer, apply heat directly to each section

The alternative to using a diffusor is covering your hair with a hair net overnight. Take each section and undress the hair applying extra Nicky Clarke Argan oil using fingers to separate each section. If you prefer a wave, comb the curl out until you create the finish you desire.

Q: I always have to go to dinners and parties straight from work – what’s the best quick style to make it look like I’ve made an effort?

I always think a low braided bun creates a sense of elegance and will get you from the desk to the dance floor in no time.

  • Start at the nape of the neck leaving the sides of your hair to fall over the ears
  • Plait hair to the ends then loosen and twist into a bun, use grips until secure
  • Spritz all over with Nicky Clarke Hold and Shine Ultimate Hairspray
