Fashion, Red Carpet By Nicky Clarke Salons

BRITS 2011

Last night we saw the Brit Awards 2011 held for the first time at the 02 Arena, a new looking trophy designed by Vivienne Westwood and the emergence of a wealth of new talent.

“Last year’s Brits were stolen by Lady Gaga; her entrance, tribute to Alexander McQueen and that wig, which I was fortunate enough to work on with Malcolm Edwards. This year had an air and romance about it – the British youth are coming through. Tinnie Tempah, Jessie J, Plan B, Paloma Faith all had a huge presence.” Says Warren Holmes, International Creative Director.

We saw elements of key Hair Trends from the Spring Summer 2011 runway on the red carpet with Cheryl Cole wearing a variation on a low ponytail; Adele a small tight updo and Jessie J epitomising high shine texture that reflects.

Elsewhere Rihanna went for a smooth blown out bob with movement on the end.  It’s a look that she wore a day earlier at the Golden Globes; ideal for running fingers through, like we saw in her performance. Movement was prominent as always with Fearne Cotton and Lisa Snowdown both dropping variations of tousled curls.

Top 5 Hair Styles of the Night

Cheryl Cole – Looked stunning in her Stella McCartney Backless dress. Perfectly accompanied by her low ponytail with a 1940s twist of drama that volumised the shape. It was also recently worn by Scarlett Johansson at the Golden Globes. Cheryl’s dress was a big number. Almost entirely backless allowing for detailing at the back; a low ponytail seeming youthful and charming yet still floating beautifully with the movement on top. The key element to the look was actually the simplest. With the sides and front brushed back, this gave the illusion the hair was moving and exposed those eyes.

Adele - She dropped a delicately sculpted small tight updo.  Carefully thought of, nothing was going to over shadow her performance. The height at the top made it look more elegant and less harsh on her face as it would have been tightly pulled back. The detailing at the back was simple yet effective. A plaited ponytail wrapped back on itself pinned in and beautifully accessorised with a hair net to cover it.

Jessie J - Her graphic structured Cleopatra bob has become her look. It reminds me of the wigs we saw at Lanvin for Auntumn Winter 2010/2011, a nod to Chrissie Hynde. A classic style that she has modernised by the little detailing we see either side of the fringe that make it even more graphic and a little cheeky. A bold shape that is built around blunt lines, the hair reflected light with high shine products; a key look for Spring Summer 2011.

Katherine Jenkins – We have put her in here because although she didn’t do anything majorly, we haven’t seen Katherine Jenkins execute the surface wave quite so perfectly. Her Vivienne Westwood dress was slightly more relaxed than the big numbers we’ve seen her in before on the red carpet so she needed something that said glamour and decadence. The brushed out set wave certainly does that but still keeps it youthful to complement the dress which is why the parting being worn slightly more central has been incorporated.

Paloma Faith – We like her, she is different. She does her own hair too. Her hair changed from the red carpet to the performance; it fell and worked much better. By the time she was performing, a perfect diagonal surface wave had appeared that occurs when just the mid lengths and ends have been tongued with a large barrel curling tong and left to cool down un-pinned and combed out using a large comb. Her fringe says what she is: contemporary 50’s pin up, short barrel rolled straight fringe with no bending on the corners. Accessorised with a large bow.
