Nicky Clarke’s prestigious Assistant Of The Year awards has returned and we welcomed it back with a bang!
Throughout December the regional heats were held; travelling to each salon where the Assistants presented their models. The Assistants theme this year was ‘MOVIES’.
‘The remit was simple. Tell the story of your movie through the hairstyle created, transcend that feeling into the hair and allow the audience to encapture that feeling’ says Nicky Clarke.
Two winners from each salon, London-Manchester-Birmingham-Leeds qualified for the final, held at the prestigious Wella studios on Monday 13th February 2012 with the 8 finalists.
The event was judged by Nicky Clarke, Simon Smith, and special guest judge Strictly Come Dancing’s Arlene Phillips.
The auditorium was packed! The night wasn’t without drama, with judges clashing, cross words, straight talking and audience interaction aplenty.
…..And without further ado, we’re delighted to announce the winners of the Nicky Clarke Assistant Of The Year 2012
1st Kaye Wiltshire, Leeds Salon
2nd Katie Binns, Leeds Salon
3rd Holly Robbins, Birmingham Salon
‘What a way for the finalists to introduce themselves to the industry and showcase their individual talent. The level of creativity, and importantly attention to detail, was remarkable and a real credit to themselves. I was taken on a journey by the contestants and really channelled their feeling. The night itself was a great success, we wanted a special guest judge but somebody who had experience as a judge. Whom better to be able to call upon but Arlene Phillips! She was fantastic and took it completely serious as you would expect! Congratulations to Kaye Wiltshire. Wonderfully sculpted periodic hair, tremendous’ says Nicky Clarke
‘I’m in the salons on a daily basis so I know these Assistants really well and was overwhelmed to see them on stage speaking to 100 people – most of them for the first time – to take it in their stride as they have done has been nothing short of remarkable. When they came to me, they’d never held a pair of scissors let alone cut a straight line and to see them only months on produce looks of such drama is a credit to themselves and our education system’ says Simon Smith Group Director, Nicky Clarke
‘They really put on a tremendous show, they’re a credit to themselves, their parents, their salons and their peers. I was honestly blown away. Holly Robbins who came 3rd was 15 years of age when we did the regional heats, she turned up in her school uniform! She’s actually a Saturday girl but comes to all the training nights. When she did her presentation, the hairs on my arms stood up. The hair was bang on, the grain perfect, the shape exemplary. The night was full of drama and made for a great show for the audience, these guys will stand us in good stead for years to come’ says Nicky Clarke
‘I joined Nicky Clarke, the ultimate in hairdressing as a judge of the Outstanding Apprentice in Hair Design Award. Not only did they have to design hair, but make up, costume, mood boards and give a speech. All I can say is, the future lies in the hands of the eight outstanding apprentices, and it was hard to pick first second and third. Some of the contestants had only just turned 16. Astonishing! Such fun working with Nicky and his team.’ says Arlene Phillips
